Food production - NNK model

Ecosystem service

Food is produced by agriculture, fishing, aquaculture, food forests and vegetable gardens. Also nature areas contribute (with limitations) to food production with game, fish, mushrooms, berries and sea beans. Most food in the Netherlands is produced by agriculture. Therefor food production is herein defined as the quantity of crops that are produced in agricultural areas.

The ecosystem service food production is modelled based on ecosystem conditions and functions, such as soil type and groundwater level.

Maps from the NNK-model

Separate sets of maps were produced for five crop groups: Fruits, vegetables, maize, grass and other crops. For each crop type five output maps are developed for the indicators: Biophysical capacity of food production, potential capacity of food production, actual food production, monetary value of food production (incl. subsidies) and monetary value of food production (excl. subsidies).

In total 25 maps are available. Not all of these maps are included in the mapviewer on Atlas of Natural Capital. The data for these maps can be provided by sending a request to atlasnatuurlijkkapitaal@rivm.nl

The following maps can be viewed on Atlas of Natural Capital:

  • Biophysical capacity of food production – fruits
  • Biophysical capacity of food production – vegetables
  • Biophysical capacity of food production – maize
  • Biophysical capacity of food production – grass
  • Biophysical capacity of food production – other crops

  • Actual food production – fruits
  • Actual food production – vegetables
  • Actual food production – maize
  • Actual food production – grass
  • Actual food production – other crops

  • Monetary value of food production (excl. subsidies)- fruits
  • Monetary value of food production (excl. subsidies)- vegetables
  • Monetary value of food production (excl. subsidies)- maize
  • Monetary value of food production (excl. subsidies)- grass
  • Monetary value of food production (excl. subsidies)- other crops

Technical documentation

Some maps within the ecosystem service of food production are developed according to the Dutch Natural Capital Model (NNK-model). Starting point for the modelling of these maps is the method of natuurrapport 2014 (see reference). Subsequently the model was adapted for the Dutch situation.
